Tip-of-the-Day: De-Jacketing

A mentor of mine once told me "If you put your suit jacket on the back of a chair and lean back on it, your suit jacket will look as if you put it on the back of a chair and leaned back on it".

I often walk into restaurants or office buildings and see men in collared shirts sitting with their jackets all squashed behind them on their chairs. I never really understood this.

So today's tip is simple.

It is not necessary to remove your jacket if you are sitting at a restaurant, or in an office setting. Usually, I leave mine on all day. A man almost always looks better with his jacket on, and if the fit is right, it shouldn't be uncomfortable. (Also, keep in mind that a well tailored jacket can easily hide a not-so-well-tailored shirt).

However, if you really feel the need to take it off, most places where de-jacketing is appropriate should have a coat rack, coat check, or some kind of closet. So no more walking around in squashed wrinkled jackets.

Thanks for reading.

Yours in style,
SB

This is a really good post - I've often wondered about the ettiquette surrounding de-jacketing in a restaraunt. Is it the done thing to eat with one's jacket on?
Also, how do you overcome the creased tail? Sometimes smoothing down the back before sitting won't work.

So today's tip is to try to not go jacket off in public, but if you do go jacket off then make sure there are coat hangers around? Got it.

Exactly. Seems simple, I know.

Also, most men should invest in wood hangers. I only use wood hangers for my clothes (esp. shirts, jackets, cost) and they help keep the shape and overall look best hanging in your closet.

Yes great point! Please, get rid of those free-from-the-dry-cleaners wire hangers fellas.

Solid tip. Some places have coat racks per table but they should make those hangers they made for purses for jackets!

It's a great tip. Most decent restaurant will offer to take your coat at the door, and will hang it somewhere for you. Ideally, you should then sit and wear your jacket, but if you know you're not going to, I suppose you may as well hand it in with your coat, instead of leaning on it for the whole meal.

As an aside, restaurants seem less and less able to deal with taking your hat at the door. I wore my trilby to the Dorchester recently and, when I handed it over, the lady who was seating us looked a bit confused as to what to do with it, and it was later returned badly crumpled. Nothing a bit of steam can't fix, but still, it's a shame.
